Inspiration: vintage photos

Vandaag deed ik een mooie aankoop: op een brocante in Amsterdam vond ik een bakje met  ‘Cartes de visites’ (in het Nederlands schijnen ze ook zo te heten). Nu kom ik die niet zoveel tegen, dus ik heb er gelijk een aantal gekocht die me erg aanspraken. Misschien weet je het: ik heb een passie voor kostuums en ben geïnteresseerd in geschiedenis. Als ik oude foto’s zie, wordt ik gelijk nieuwsgierig naar de mensen die er op staan: hou oud zouden ze zijn, hebben ze over het algemeen een gelukkig leven, hoe zijn hun omstandigheden, waar wonen ze, in wat voor soort huis, hoe is hun huwelijk? Kortom: allemaal vragen waar geen antwoorden op zijn, maar ik probeer wel iets van hun uitstraling op te pakken en daardoor wat informatie te verkrijgen. Wat ga ik ermee doen? De foto’s heb ik gekopieerd onder een gewone kopieermachine om te gebruiken in mijn art journals. Verder ben ik van plan ze in te scannen en er op tekenen.

I did quite a purchase today: I found a box with vintage photographs (‘cartes de visite’ in French) on a brocante in Amsterdam. Now I don’t find these often so I decided to buy a couple that spoke out to me. Maybe you know: I have a passion for costumes and am interested in history. If I see old photographs I am immediately curious to the people in the picture: how old are they, do they have a happy life, how are their circumstances, where do they live, in what kind of house, how is their marriage? In short: all kinds of questions to which are no answers, but I try to read their energy and facial expressions in order to receive some information. What am I going to do with the photos? I copied them to be used in my art journals and I plan to scan them in so that I  can draw on top of them.

De achterkant van de cartes de visite zijn ook zo mooi; en het leuke is, sommigen komen gewoon uit Nederland.
