Mono-printing is a simple printing technique that allows you to create one unique print (mono) at a time. Most printing techniques are specifically designed for creating multiple prints. You can do this on a glass plate or on a softer plate like the Gelli plate, which is a plate made of a type of gelatin and a roller. You don’t need a press, which makes it so accessible. We’ll be printing with a Gelli plate.

We’ll be working exclusively with acrylic paint and experimenting with various leaf sizes, printing them on regular printer paper. We’ll also consider layering, as not all prints turn out as expected the first time, and then you can reprint over them. Mono-printing is fun and easy, and suitable for beginners. It involves lots of experimenting, resulting in lots of prints. And don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.
A great way to spend a creative and inspiring afternoon!

What are we going to do?
- We’ll first create a series of solid base prints using a single color (the background);
- Once these are dry, we’ll create a second print using the leaves in a different color on top of them.
- We’ll determine whether this is sufficient for a successful print or whether another print is needed.
- You’ll learn about color, contrast, and composition in a playful way.
- At the end of the afternoon, you’ll take home a stack of mono-prints and one in a mat.

Bring along
- Old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty (I’ll provide a few aprons or shirts).
- Leaves that you’ve found in your garden or the park.
- Enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to explore your own creativity.
