Gisteren besloten we om weer op de motor te springen en een stukje door Noord Holland te rijden naar de Afsluitdijk. Nu spring je niet zomaar op de motor, een ritje vergt nogal wat voorbereidingen, maar eenmaal op het stalen ros was het heerlijk om eens de stad uit te zijn en te genieten van het platte Noord Hollandse landschap. Op de Afsluitdijk zelf zijn we bij het Lely momument afgestapt, hebben we onze boterhammen gegeten en genoten we van de weidsheid van aan de ene kant het IJsselmeer en aan de andere kant de Waddenzee. Het was er niet heel druk, enkele buitenlandse en binnenlandse reizigers maakten het net wat gezellig. Zie beneden voor een impressie.
Yesterday we decided to hop onto the motorbike and to take it for a spin through the province of North Holland to the closure dam, or ‘Afsluitdijk’. The Afsluitdijk is a dam between the IJsselmeer and the Waddenzee and is part of a larger plan to protect the Netherlands from the sea, its construction was started in 1927.
Hopping onto a motorbike is easier said than done, but once we were on the road it was lovely to be out of the city for a change and to enjoy the flat landscapes of North Holland. On the Afsluitdijk itself we stopped at the Lely momument (the engineer who drew out the first plan for the dam), ate our sandwiches and enjoyed the spaciousness of the IJsselmeer on the one hand and the Waddenzee on the other. It was not very crowded, a couple of foreign and domestic travellers made it a bit lively. Look below for a visual impression.
