Vintage postcards from Venice

Venetië is behoorlijk toeristisch geworden.

Venice has become very touristy. Over the years that I have visited the city, I saw tourism increase enormously. One of the consequences of that is that it is more and more difficult to find authentic and original shops. They still can be found if you go outside of the usual streets, but the city is swamped with mask and glass shops. Personally I love wandering through the little street in neighbourhoods that are not so busy and in one of those hoods (Dorsoduro) my friend V. and I found a little shop that looked like it came straight from the seventies: apparently nothing had been done to the interior or the vendor in decades. It was one of those stale shops that sold old records, posters, books and cards. I found three vintage postcards from the beginning of the 20th century and one even much older. I don’t come across them often, but when I do I immediately buy a couple. Look here for an earlier find. I was thrilled with my discovery!

vintage photo woman twenties

Vintage postcard of a woman, probably from the late Twenties.

vintage photo girl 1931

Vintage postcard of a young girl , dated on the back 15 March 1931

Old postcards or photographs give a glimpse of the past: what were the people wearing, how did they look and in what kind of surroundings are the images taken? The photos are obviously taken by a professional photographer in a studio with backgrounds varying from neutral to parklike landscapes. When I look at old family photo from that era I notice that people look very serious, without a smile. That is totally different today, where everybody is waving with their cell phone and tries to pose as happy as possible.
