Shambhala training 5: Open sky

Last weekend I was at the Shambhala Centre Rotterdam for meditation weekend level 5: Open sky, original stroke. The levels are sequential and have a certain logic. Every time it is explained a little differently what meditation actually is. Teacher Hans Zwart told us this time that meditation is about being present, we forget that a lot, but we can remind ourselves all the  time. Meditation has three aspects: posture, breathing and mind. To name a few aspects of the posture: sitting in the middle of your cushion, legs folded, hands on the upper legs, straight spine, head aligned with the spinal column and the eyes are open (we are not asleep). A dignified, royal and wakeful posture. The breath can only be in the present. The mind are the thoughts that emerge, but we can always choose to come back to the present moment.

The meditation technique of this level is that there is no technique, you let go everything including the attempt to meditate. The breath continues by itself, everything continues by itself by letting go, “the sun rises for free” is a Dutch saying. Pure presence. The posture is there, the breath is there and the thoughts are too, they come and go. Now there is no reference point anymore, everything that occurs is there, without judgement. Every dot or stroke on a sheet of paper is a part of the paper and at the same time is a start of something new. So every sound or thought is a dot in space, a beginning, and a reminder to come back to the present.

This type of meditation is about being present in the moment, to hear the sounds that occur, to see what you are looking at. Awake and clear. This is the situation that you can extend to daily life: in every situation someone talks, somethings moves, something happens that can catch your attention, without be drawn into thought. I like the connection to contemplative photography: that is actually meditating (being awake and clear) with your camera, walking through your surroundings and enjoying what is without judgement, enjoying what occurs.
